This delicious Mango Matcha Green Smoothie is a nutritional powerhouse. It is packed with fruit and vegetables and will help you boost your daily antioxidant intake. For a while, I have been drinking Matcha Lattes when I go to cafes but the hefty price tag has kept me from enjoying it more often. Therefore, I was delighted when I received a little a tin of Organic Ceremonial Matcha kindly sent by Kiss me Organics. For disclosure, I haven’t been paid to write this post I simply enjoy experimenting with ingredients and products I like.
Matcha Green Tea is thought to have many nutritional health benefits, let’s have a closer look at what it is and how you can benefit from it.
What is Matcha Green Tea and how it is different from regular green tea?
Tea as a diffusion was discovered by chance nearly 5,000 years ago in China. Japanese monks who visited China carried tea leaves home and introduced it into the Japanese culture by around 805 A.D. Yet it took another couple of hundred years until around the mid-1500s the matcha process was established.
Matcha Green Tea and regular green tea are made from the same plant but matcha preparation involves covering green tea plants with shade cloths before they’re harvested. This triggers the growth of leaves with better flavour and texture. The leaves are then hand harvested, steamed to stop the fermentation, dried and then aged in cold storage to deepen the flavour. These dried leaves are then stone-ground into a fine powder.
Instead of just drinking what has been extracted by the hot water from the leaves, you are consuming the actual leaf. Some people find that matcha on its own has a grassy flavour and a slightly bitter tinge to it but you can consume it in many delicious ways. My Mango Matcha Green Smoothie is just one of them. It can also be used in iced drinks, cakes, pancakes, muffins, smoothie bowls or this Best Energy Boosting Green Smoothie. Let me know in the comments in which recipes you have used it!

Nutritional Benefits of Matcha Green Tea
A cup of matcha green tea made with one half teaspoon of powder contains around 35 milligrams of caffeine, which is slightly more than is found in a cup of regular green tea. Matcha is believed to have the ability to soothe, calm and relax while at the same time to increase your alertness.
Also, while green tea contains high amounts of antioxidants, matcha has even more. In fact, it may contain as many antioxidants as you might find in 15 times the amount of pomegranates or blueberries.
Studies suggest that 1 cup of matcha may provide the antioxidant equivalent of 3 cups of regular green tea and as much as 137 times more antioxidants than low-grade green tea.
Matcha contains protein and is an excellent source of vitamins C and A, fibre and iron. Studies show it might have the ability to fight bacteria, viruses and fungi, such as staph infections, hepatitis B and Candida albicans.
One of the traditional problems people have with getting enough nutrients in their diet is absorption. It doesn’t really matter how many dark leafy green vegetables you eat or how much green tea you drink if your body isn’t absorbing it properly. Adding lemon or rice milk to your green tea can help the body absorb necessary catechins found in tea. Catechins are a specific class of natural polyphenols and antioxidants that might help to support your immune system.
Another great drink for when the days are getting shorter is my Turmeric Ginger Tea it’s my favourite natural cold remedy.
