Healthy Homemade Chocolate Waffles
Are you and your loved one waffle lovers? Then these healthy homemade chocolate waffles are the perfect treat.
They are easy to make and full of nutritional goodness. Best of all, they are vegan and gluten-free which means that almost everyone can enjoy them. The mashed, ripe banana and cinnamon will add natural sweetness without the need for added sugar.
About 6 months ago, I gave a new home to my mum’s old waffle iron and started experimenting with all sorts of recipes like these Sweet Potato Waffles Two Ways.
In Germany, we often bake waffles as a Sunday treat and serve them with hot cherries and whipped cream. I had never tried savoury waffles before but was certainly pleasantly surprised. As I have quite a sweet tooth, I will still give preference to something slightly sweet in the morning but, hey, nothing wrong with that, huh!?!
If you consider waffles to be a Sunday treat only, think again. They are easy to make and can be frozen or stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days.
Consider doubling the recipe, making a big batch and simply take out as many as you require. When you put the waffles in the toaster they will turn crunchy again and fill the air with an amazing cinnamon smell.
Of course, you can elevate them with any topping your heart desires. Berries and Homemade Coconut Milk Yoghurt make a great topping. You could also drizzle some maple syrup or warm nut butter on top and sprinkle with almonds.
Okay, enough waffling (pun intended) let’s jump into the recipe, shall we?

Healthy Homemade Chocolate Waffles
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons ground flaxseeds or chia seeds
- 3/4 cup almond milk you can use any type of non-dairy milk
- 3/4 cup oat flour just blitz some oats in your food processor, use gluten-free oats if required
- 1/4 cup cacao powder unsweetened
- 1 teaspoon baking powder gluten-free
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil melted
- 1 medium-sized very ripe banana mashed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup optional
Toppings
- 3/4 cup coconut yoghurt
- Strawberries quartered
Instructions
- In a cup, combine the flaxseeds or chia seeds with almond milk and let soak for about 5 minutes until it turns into a gloopy mass.
- Add the dry ingredients to a medium-sized bowl.
- Stir in the wet ingredients to create a thick batter.
- Heat the waffle iron, brush both sides with coconut or any other oil. Cook in about 1/2-cup servings or as directed by the manufacturer. Don't start with the highest setting as it can easily burn. I consider the first waffle to be a test waffle and just the temperature according to the result.
- Top with coconut yoghurt and berries of your choice.

Check out these delicious Valentine’s Day treats from my fellow Free-From Bloggers:
Oh my goodness these look amazing! I love waffles, never actually made chocolate ones though.
Thank you, it was actually the first time for me as well to incorporate chocolate into waffles but I loved it. 🙂
These look STUNNING! I love the combination of chocolate and strawberries. Just perfect.
Thank you, I couldn’t agree more, it is a match made in heaven.:-)
I love these little beauties and even more so because I can actually eat them myself! The waffle iron hasn’t been out for a while so I’ll dust it off this weekend.
Mine is from the 70’s and still going strong. Enjoy your weekend and hot waffles. 🙂
Ooh these sound so good. I only got a waffle maker recently and haven’t experimented with it a lot yet. I love the idea of having them with coconut yoghurt too.
I find that I am going through waffle phases and then I forget about them for a couple of months. Enjoy experimenting.
Oooh I have to try these, so so pretty! Without a waffle maker this is going to need some experimenting I think!
That’s going to be a challenge, maybe just make the dough a bit thinner and turn them into pancakes. 🙂
Good plan! We do love pancakes in this house! x
These are utterly beautiful;l! Well done Eva.
Thank you so much, Vicki.
I am into waffles at the moment and so is my daughter 🙂 so I am definitely going to try this lovely recipe.
Question: do I add yoghurt to the wet mixture or it is only for the topping?
Hi Barbara, I hope you will enjoy them. The yoghurt is only meant to be a topping. 🙂
Thank you – I will make them on Sunday 🙂
Ha! That’s so funny. When #FreeFromValentine was first being planned, I was going to make heart-shaped chocolate waffles too (but then all my plans got side-lined). Yours look yummy and would make a perfect V-Day breakfast x
That’s so funny Kate, great minds think alike. 😉
Wow i love the ingredients in these waffles and sugar free too. Look delicious hun
Hi Jo, thanks a lot, the sweetness entirely relies on the ripeness of the mashed banana, sometimes I add a tiny bit of maple syrup to make it slightly sweeter but that’s totally optional. 🙂
These look so gorgeous! I was disappointed I missed out on the waffle irons in Lidl recently, I will definitely save this recipe for when I get one!
Hi Laura, that’s a pity, but fortunately, they have them on special quite regularly. 🙂
I’m always looking for new waffle ideas! I’m going to try to replace the mashed banana with some applesauce and sweet potatoes, a la your more savory examples, so that it’s completely safe for everyone in our house (hard to do!). 🙂
Hi Nicole, let me know how they turned out this way 🙂
Wow Eva! Your vegan and gluten-free waffles look absolutely scrumptious! I also love your photography 🙂
Thank you Mel, that’s a great compliment from someone with your photography skills. Hope you will enjoy them.
These look amazing, perfect breakfast in bed type food!! I need to get a waffle maker ASAP now so we can try these! Thanks for sharing xx
Hi Lauren, thanks a lot, yes they are perfect to consume in bed. 😉
I love your waffle recipe I decided to try it in my donut pan and they were delicious. I had breast cancer in 2020 and cannot eat sugar so it’s perfect for me. Thanks so much for sharing!
Hi Connie, brilliant idea, I am delighted to hear that you enjoy them. All the best:-)
Do I use ground flaxseed as it says in the ingredients or chia seeds as it says in the directions?
Hi Heidi, in the ingredients it says flaxseeds or chia seeds, both are fine to use. Please enjoy 🙂
