Healthy Homemade Chocolate Waffles

Are you and your loved one waffle lovers? Then these healthy homemade chocolate waffles are the perfect treat.

They are easy to make and full of nutritional goodness. Best of all, they are vegan and gluten-free which means that almost everyone can enjoy them. The mashed, ripe banana and cinnamon will add natural sweetness without the need for added sugar.

About 6 months ago, I gave a new home to my mum’s old waffle iron and started experimenting with all sorts of recipes like these Sweet Potato Waffles Two Ways

In Germany, we often bake waffles as a Sunday treat and serve them with hot cherries and whipped cream. I had never tried savoury waffles before but was certainly pleasantly surprised. As I have quite a sweet tooth, I will still give preference to something slightly sweet in the morning but, hey, nothing wrong with that, huh!?!

Healthy Homemade Chocolate Waffles

If you consider waffles to be a Sunday treat only, think again. They are easy to make and can be frozen or stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days.

Consider doubling the recipe, making a big batch and simply take out as many as you require. When you put the waffles in the toaster they will turn crunchy again and fill the air with an amazing cinnamon smell.

Of course, you can elevate them with any topping your heart desires. Berries and Homemade Coconut Milk Yoghurt make a great topping. You could also drizzle some maple syrup or warm nut butter on top and sprinkle with almonds.

Okay, enough waffling (pun intended) let’s jump into the recipe, shall we?

Ingredients

Toppings

  • 3/4 cup coconut yoghurt
  • Strawberries quartered

Instructions

  • In a cup, combine the flaxseeds or chia seeds with almond milk and let soak for about 5 minutes until it turns into a gloopy mass.
  • Add the dry ingredients to a medium-sized bowl.
  • Stir in the wet ingredients to create a thick batter.
  • Heat the waffle iron, brush both sides with coconut or any other oil. Cook in about 1/2-cup servings or as directed by the manufacturer. Don't start with the highest setting as it can easily burn. I consider the first waffle to be a test waffle and just the temperature according to the result.
  • Top with coconut yoghurt and berries of your choice.

Notes

If you prefer a thinner batter simply add more almond milk.
