What is Bone Broth?
You might have guessed it, it is exactly what you thought it was, it is broth made from animal bones.
Recently, I bought a slow cooker and was thinking of ways to utilise it. I don’t know if slow cookers aren’t very popular in Germany or if it is only my friends and me that have never heard of them before. Therefore, I was keen on putting it to good use. For a while now I have been researching natural remedies and beef bone broth was the one that continuously kept popping up. There are different ways of making beef bone broth you can make it by simply simmering the marrow bones in water for 24-48 hours or you can combine it with vegetables, herbs and spices to give it some extra vitamins and flavour. The longer you simmer it the more gelatin, minerals and other nutrients from the bones will be released. Don’t worry if you don’t have a slow cooker you can also make it in a regular pot on the stove. If you do it in a pot you might have to skim the surface more frequently.
Homemade beef bone broth differs a lot from shop-bought one which mostly consists of artificial flavours and additives. Bone broth can be made from beef, lamb, chicken or even fish but it’s important to make sure to use bones from organic or grass-fed animals.
Beef Bone Broth Benefits
Beef bone broth has a long list of supposed health benefits such as:
- delivering important vitamins and minerals

- overcoming food allergies and intolerances
- benefiting the digestive system
- boosting the immune system

- aiding weight loss
- promoting joint health
Consuming bone broth regularly can be an inexpensive way to support your joints. Glucosamine is the compound sold in pricey supplements to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain. Try this natural remedy before spending money on expensive joint-care, weight loss or sleep supplements.
Replacing one meal a day with a cup of beef bone broth on a temporary weight loss program can help you feel full for longer. The gelatin in bone broth has been scientifically proven to maximise satiety.
Glycine found in bone broth is known for having calming effects, which may help you sleep better.
Bone broth is a great source of all the valuable amino acids, collagen, gelatin and trace minerals. In fact, there are dozens of different nutrients found in bone broth, many of which can’t be obtained easily from other commonly eaten foods. That’s partly why there are so many incredible bone broth benefits.
